Finally, in one place, is a collection of the some of the most important and informed voices on the war against Islamist extremism. The most respected and talented writers of the most important books on the war interviewed by one of the country’s most accomplished broadcast journalists and commentators.

From 9/11 forward, talk show host and law professor Hugh Hewitt has brought his unique combination of skills to the task of interviewing the authors of the most important books about the war waged against the West by al Qaeda, the radical mullahs of Iran and other Islamist jihadists. These authors have ranged across the political spectrum, but each has brought superb skills to the very difficult task of explaining why 9/11 happened and the deep conflicts the war involves. The war rages across a vast number of battlefields and involves a number of countries very distant from America and at best dimly understood even by senior policy makers. Hewitt has sought out those authors whose contributions to the literature of the war are enduring, and has spent long periods of interview time on air with them. Those interviews are collected here, and provide a comprehensive and riveting primer to the war, as well as a guide to how such interviews ought to be conducted when the subject is complex and the stakes very high. These interviews are springboards to the books themselves, each one of which is on what Hewitt calls his “Necessary Bookshelf.”

About the Author

Hugh Hewitt is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Michigan Law School. Beginning with a clerkship to Judges Roger Robb and George MacKinnon on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, he spent six years in the Reagan Administration in a variety of positions including Assistant Counsel in the White House and Special Assistant to the Attorney General of the United States. He began his radio broadcast career in 1990 with KFI in Los Angeles, his television career at LA’s KCET in 1992, and his law teaching career in 1995 at Chapman University School of Law. Professor Hewitt is the author of eight previous books, including Blog: Understanding the Information Reformation That is Changing Your World and Searching for God America, the companion volume to the PBS television series by the same name which Hewitt conceived and hosted. Hewitt has received three Emmys for his work as co-host for the ground-breaking nightly news program in Los Angeles, Life & Times, which he hosted from 1992 until his nationally syndicated radio show moved to afternoons in fall of 2001. Professor Hewitt’s talk show is heard in more than 100 cities Monday through Friday from 6 to 9 PM EST, including most of the major markets in the US including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston and Atlanta and far flung outposts from Alaska to Honolulu.
